To better understand what professionals prioritize when choosing their next workplace, our recruiters conducted a LinkedIn poll with six key categories:
- Benefits and Salary
- Company Culture
- Project and Work Scope
- Learning and Development
- Job Security
- Career Growth
The results offer valuable insight into what matters most to today’s workforce—and why. They also help shape how we approach hiring, development, and retention.
The Results Are In
1. Benefits and Salary – 29.6% of the Votes
This was no surprise. In today’s economy, where inflation and rising costs dominate daily decisions, compensation has become more than just a number—it’s a need for workplace stability. Especially in tech, where demand is high and opportunities are plentiful, professionals are increasingly discerning about offers. They expect more than just perks; they want transparency, fairness, and packages that reflect their contributions. At Nion we believe in offering our consultants a wide set of means that would allow a balanced quality of life. Besides market salaries and standard benefits, we aim to remain flexible and adjust to everybody’s needs. Work-life effectiveness is more than just a catchy phrase but rather a necessity for having an engaged and healthy employee. We believe in the flexibility that we preach and go the extra mile to offer it such as:
- Flexible work hours, flexible break times, flexible vacation plans;
- We actively promote healthy life-styles, whether it is by investing in health care programs, sport events – or giving a generous wellness allowance;
- We add an extra layer of support – a Consultant Manager role. The Consultant Manager follows an employee’s journey with regular checkups to ensure their personal and professional growth;
- We strive to have modern offices in central locations that allow for easy access to different facilities;
- We believe that people that know each other, work better together so we invest in great social events.
2. Company Culture – 27.5% of the Votes
The results confirmed our belief that workplace culture is king. This speaks volumes. As work becomes more hybrid and digital, culture isn’t something that just “happens” around the coffee machine—it must be intentional.
At Nion, we’ve seen how trust, autonomy, and psychological safety play a major role in team performance and retention. Culture is no longer a “nice-to-have”; it’s a differentiator. The dream at Nion is to create a place that is designed to inspire excellence but with a down-to-earth and friendly attitude. Egos should be left at the door, in favour of great collaboration, teamwork and continuous improvement. A place where incredibly talented individuals are empowered to learn, grow and put their skills to work while bringing each other to the forefront.
3. Learning and Development – 22.5% of the Votes
The message here is clear: tech professionals want and need to grow, no matter how senior they are. In tech especially, learning is survival. Whether it’s mastering new stacks, exploring leadership paths, or staying sharp on industry trends, continuous development is part of the job—and part of the appeal. At Nion, we actively invest in hard and soft skills development through:
- Internal tech forums and academies
- External certifications and specialized courses
- Personal development programs
- Mentorship opportunities
- Internships and graduate entry points
Project and Work Scope – Lower Than Expected
Interestingly, Project and Work Scope didn’t rank as high as expected, despite being frequently cited as a motivator in job interviews. This could suggest that many IT professionals, especially those in consultancy, see challenging projects as a baseline expectation. Alternatively, it may mean that even with exciting work, other factors—like pay or culture—tip the scales when making a career move.
That said, at Nion we believe that the variety of interesting projects and challenging work scopes keeps people motivated and drives innovation. For this reason, we offer opportunities across diverse industries, domains, and technologies. Our goal is to provide employees with dynamic work experiences within our company, so they don’t need to seek new challenges elsewhere.
Career Growth and Job Security ranked lower than expected—a shift from previous decades when these were foundational priorities. Why the change? Our take is that today’s seasoned professionals are confident in their value and flexibility. They’re less focused on a rigid 10-year plan and more on finding the right environment for their current needs. When a company offers strong learning opportunities and challenging projects, career growth often follows naturally.
Though the poll results didn’t highlight it, job security remains a long-term retention staple. Employees who lack stability are more likely to seek new opportunities. While recent years have brought challenges to the tech sector, we at Nion believe a more stable future is ahead—and job security will regain its importance in IT.
This poll is one small but meaningful step in understanding what today’s tech professionals truly value. And while preferences evolve, one thing remains constant: people want to work where they feel seen, supported, and empowered.
At Nion, we don’t just want to hire top talent—we want to build a workplace where that talent thrives. Insights like these help us stay aligned with the real needs of professionals in today’s tech landscape. Because when we listen closely, we don’t just improve our culture—we shape the future of work.
