Peter Malmström, Delivery Manager at Nion, combines strategic oversight with a hands-on approach to ensure client success. With a background spanning consulting roles like product owner and project manager, Peter now focuses on strengthening Nion’s deliveries, balancing client expectations with sustainable outcomes. His journey highlights a dedication to teamwork, innovation, and long-term solutions. Let’s explore his insights.
Can you describe what a normal workday looks like for you?
Normal workdays don’t really exist for me because I spend much of my time reacting to ongoing deliveries. This means I stay in close dialogue with Nion’s Delivery Managers and other internal stakeholders like Finance, Sales, and regional managers, depending on the issue or opportunity at hand.
How have you arrived at your current role, has your role changed over the years? Was it a role that you always aimed for or is it something that happened along the way?
My role has changed dramatically over the years. Starting as a consultant, I took on various roles like product owner, scrum master, and project manager before transitioning to a more internal position. This internal role has also evolved but has always focused on strengthening our deliveries. My goal has consistently been to ensure our clients feel we go above and beyond while maintaining a feasible economic outcome.
What is the unique set of skills that you bring to your position?
It’s really for others to say, but if I had to choose, I’d highlight my ability to see the bigger picture while managing multiple tasks. I can dive deep into details to understand a situation but always act in line with Nion’s overall goals. Balancing these two aspects isn’t always easy, especially when decisions need to be made quickly.
What is your management style?
I aim to be open and direct. Everyone I work with should feel my door is always open and that we can discuss anything. Clear communication is also key—no one should have to guess what I think about their work or performance. While direct communication can sometimes feel uncomfortable, I believe it’s more effective in the long run.
Which traits and skills do you think make for a good employee?
The ideal traits depend on the role, but some characteristics are always valuable at Nion. First, you must be a team player, especially when it comes to helping colleagues. As consultants, we often find ourselves in situations where we need support, and knowing help is always available at Nion makes a big difference. Second, you should be curious and open to new things, whether it’s new assignments or personal development. Team players who are eager to learn will always thrive here.
Do you have a unique problem-solving process that really makes an impact for clients?
In my role, I always prioritize the client’s needs. This starts with understanding their problem and sometimes guiding them away from suboptimal pathways. Once we’re aligned, I consider Nion’s perspective, including our pain points and limits. If we can’t deliver what they’re asking for, chances are others can’t either. Helping clients understand this allows them to make more informed, long-term decisions.
How do you stay updated on trends and news in your domain? What about Nion’s reputation, market position and services do you think is most exciting?
Nion’s ability to combine strong individual consultants with a team-focused approach makes us stand out. Delivering high-quality services across Europe gives us a competitive edge. The industry has long relied on individual excellence, but I believe that won’t be enough in the future. Clients will expect more than what one consultant can offer, regardless of their seniority. For us, the key is finding ways to integrate all of Nion’s expertise into every delivery.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I enjoy playing golf! I also love spending time with my kids. So, my priorities are: 1) golf, and 2) being with my kids.
Peter’s commitment to teamwork, innovation, and long-term solutions makes him an invaluable part of the Nion team.
